The VW Jetta test

The test went amazingly. All I have to say about the new Jetta TDi is that it is probably one of the most convenient and user friendly cars on the market today. Also, let me not forget how incredibly useful this car can be for road trips. I tested it today with two other grown men and we all fit very comfortably. The amount of leg room in the Jetta is staggereing, weather you're in the front seat or the back. The navigation screen (which didn't have navagation) was very user friendly especially for being a touch screen. The menus were incredibly easy to access and use. Unlike the unloved, adopted, bastard child known as iDrive, this menu system, although much less complicated, was an absolute joy to use. The sound that came out from the speakers at either full volume (which by the way is really $&&*^@# loud) or a suttle whisper was crisp, clean, and very audible.

I've heard quite a few people complain about how rigid and stiff the seats in the new Jetta's are, well they can suck it, those seats are brilliant. The side bolsters hugged all three of us like they didn't want us to go away. The entire button assembly on the steering wheel and on the center console was increbily well layed out.

Let's talk about trunk space shall we, there is quite a bit. Now this is isn't Car and Driver or Motor Trend so I can't tell you how many square feet of trunk space there is but holy crap it's ample. I was able to get in the trunk, lay down, and spin 360 degree's without a problem. The trunk is MASSIVE, I'm sure it could fit anything you could possibly need for a trip. I'm willing to bet that if I gave a SEAL team the car and told them to get in but make sure that all their gear was in the trunk and only the trunk, they could do it...granted, they are SEALS, I'm sure there's not a' lot they can't do.

Ah yes, performance, my favorite part about cars. The Jetta is powered by a 140hp (138bhp) Diesel engine that also churns out 268 ft-lbs of torque. Allow me to dazzle you with some performance figures...

  • In Drive (remember it has the DSG transmission) it did 0-30mph in 5.57 seconds
and it did the sprint from 0-62mph in 11.93 seconds.
  • In Sport mode (which by the way is actually some fun) it did 0-30mph in 4.60 seconds
and it did 0-62mph in 11.13 seconds
  • In Tiptronic (the whole manual thing without a clutch) it did 0-30mph in 5.20 seconds and it ran from 0-62mph in 11.16 seconds
Okay, enough of all that, lets just get down to it, I enjoyed this car, I found very user friendly and fun to drive. Okay, it was a diesel so it was pretty damn boring but then again you don't buy a jetta for its performance, thats like buying a Saturn V rocket for its fuel economy. For the price, it's absolutely perfect. Would I buy it though, no. I have never been a VW fan, I feel like if I buy it I'm going to regret it 6 months down the road, but hey, if you have an extra $28,000 lying around, go pick one up.

  1. I sure hope the improved the durability of all those rubber covered switches, my ex bought an '08 and within three months the window switches looked like crap.
