The VW Jetta test

The test went amazingly. All I have to say about the new Jetta TDi is that it is probably one of the most convenient and user friendly cars on the market today. Also, let me not forget how incredibly useful this car can be for road trips. I tested it today with two other grown men and we all fit very comfortably. The amount of leg room in the Jetta is staggereing, weather you're in the front seat or the back. The navigation screen (which didn't have navagation) was very user friendly especially for being a touch screen. The menus were incredibly easy to access and use. Unlike the unloved, adopted, bastard child known as iDrive, this menu system, although much less complicated, was an absolute joy to use. The sound that came out from the speakers at either full volume (which by the way is really $&&*^@# loud) or a suttle whisper was crisp, clean, and very audible.

I've heard quite a few people complain about how rigid and stiff the seats in the new Jetta's are, well they can suck it, those seats are brilliant. The side bolsters hugged all three of us like they didn't want us to go away. The entire button assembly on the steering wheel and on the center console was increbily well layed out.

Let's talk about trunk space shall we, there is quite a bit. Now this is isn't Car and Driver or Motor Trend so I can't tell you how many square feet of trunk space there is but holy crap it's ample. I was able to get in the trunk, lay down, and spin 360 degree's without a problem. The trunk is MASSIVE, I'm sure it could fit anything you could possibly need for a trip. I'm willing to bet that if I gave a SEAL team the car and told them to get in but make sure that all their gear was in the trunk and only the trunk, they could do it...granted, they are SEALS, I'm sure there's not a' lot they can't do.

Ah yes, performance, my favorite part about cars. The Jetta is powered by a 140hp (138bhp) Diesel engine that also churns out 268 ft-lbs of torque. Allow me to dazzle you with some performance figures...

  • In Drive (remember it has the DSG transmission) it did 0-30mph in 5.57 seconds
and it did the sprint from 0-62mph in 11.93 seconds.
  • In Sport mode (which by the way is actually some fun) it did 0-30mph in 4.60 seconds
and it did 0-62mph in 11.13 seconds
  • In Tiptronic (the whole manual thing without a clutch) it did 0-30mph in 5.20 seconds and it ran from 0-62mph in 11.16 seconds
Okay, enough of all that, lets just get down to it, I enjoyed this car, I found very user friendly and fun to drive. Okay, it was a diesel so it was pretty damn boring but then again you don't buy a jetta for its performance, thats like buying a Saturn V rocket for its fuel economy. For the price, it's absolutely perfect. Would I buy it though, no. I have never been a VW fan, I feel like if I buy it I'm going to regret it 6 months down the road, but hey, if you have an extra $28,000 lying around, go pick one up.

Well....

I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that I will be testing the 2004 Mercedes S500.

The bad news is that I have no idea when.

The new Honda Accord

Last night I found out that sometime in the near future I will be testing out the new 2009 Honda Accord V6 coupe. I'm fairly excited about this considering that I am in fact a Honda fan and I have always liked Accords...well, there was that one time from 1994 to 1997 that I just pretended that they didn't' exist, but that's besides the point. The point is that I will be testing it out and there will be pictures.

In case there were any doubts, I still am going to be testing out the 2010 VW Jetta TDI this weekend. I will include pictures with the review.

Oh Mercedes

Well the wait is pretty much over, the new SLS AMG is out, and it is absolutely gorgeous. It should be here about next spring and I believe Mercedes Benz is asking $225,000.

Let's see what party favors it comes with.

  • A DOHC 32-Valve V8, aluminum block and heads, and port fuel injection
  • A new 7-speed dual clutch automated manual (it was made specifically for this car and was made in conjuction with Getrag)
  • Eight airbags
  • 6 cubic feet of trunk space
  • Optional carbon ceramic disk brakes

I say we look at some performance figures. The SLS will sprint from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, it will also do the 1320 in about 11.7 second at 125mph, then it will continue to go from 125 all the way to a governed top speed of 195mph. I bet it can do something to the tune of 205.

Now, I'm a mere mortal, my chances of ever driving this car are slim if any, but I don't care. Looking at it is more than enough. It evokes a sense of wonder, and thats a' lot for someone who loves cars. I've sat inside Ferrari's, Lamborghinis, Bugatti's, Spykers, you name it, and it's been a while since I saw something so simple and elegant as the SLS. I really have to hand it to the boys and girls over at AMG, they did a superb job designing and building this car. It looks absolutlely solid, granted, the new Chevy Suburban looks solid, but it dosen't give you that warm feeling inside that you might be making everyone around you astronimically jealous. Who know, maybe sometime next year the collection will get their hands on one or the Mercedes dealership will get one and I can test drive it. If I do, you all will be the first to know, I promise.

Now that we're on the subject of Mercedes, I would like to say that I saw a CL63 AMG Black today, and I'm almost positive that I now know what love is.

Maybe this weekend

Hopefully if I have time to get around to it, I will be reviewing the 2009 VW Jetta TDI.

If there are any cars you would like me to test out, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Welcome to my little metal shell

Considering that this is my first foray into automotive journalism, bare with me while I work out some of the kinks. This particular post wont be about a specific car or car company, but a telling of things to come. I would like to start by saying thank you in advance to all those who will be reading this and enjoy it. If you love cars as much as I do then you should have a good time reading this, if you don't like cars or have never really found an interest in them, well then you should go learn to knit or something.
